Community Description : Vishnu Boys Hindu College is a secondary school in the Caroni district with a student population of 563 students. A signifi cant percentage of the students are not academically inclined and as a result they leave school early to gain employment. Some students are seen as 'high risk' students in terms of delinquency and they as well usually leave school before form 5 and CXC.

Problem Addressed : This project seeks to assist "at risk" students to channel their energy into something positive and to give them a sense of achievement. Extra curricular activities will ensure that students are constuctively occupied with less time for negative behaviours and indiscipline. They will also be encouraged to attend school since students will have something else to look forward to besides academics.
How were the target group involved in identifying the project? : Meetings were held with the P.E. teacher and student council. These meetings centered around the need for proper facilities for extra-curricular activities. At meetings the various sporting disciplines were identified as an arena for intervention. Deans have recognised that proactive intervention is needed to assist these 'at risk' students before the problem escalates or become drop-outs.
How benefit project : The target group will develop their multiple intelligence through regular and punctual exercises, attendence at school as well as participation in extra-curricular activities. Students grades will improve, self confidence and motivation will develop, positive leadership skills will be attained as a direct result of the combination of all these results. The youths will grow holistically and will develop as disciplined adults.
How involved project deployment : Grass planting exercise (all members of the target group in collaboration with student council). Members of the target group will be responsible for the fixing of the wicket surf and general maintenance of playing area. Target group involved in rental programme for tennis racquets, bats, balls and general upkeep of equipments.
Environmental concerns : Raising of dust during grading. Constant wetting of area to be prepared.

Objective(s) : 1) To improve and increase attendence of 'at risk' students.
2) To develop the multiple intelligences of academic underchievers especially bodily kinesthetic, intrapersonal and interpersonal intelligence
3) To reduce the incidence of indiscipline amongst 'at risk' students.
4) To develop positive leadership skills in students with behavioural problems.

Element Repeat How Sustained
Every year different coharts of students will benefit from this project. The equipment, grounds, etc will be well maintained so as to ensure their sustainability. Networking with PTA will take place if future funding is required.

The targeted students will benefit from participation in the programme during the course of the year. They will continue to participate in these activities after the year and will then mentor another group of students who may pose potential disciplinary problems.

To move beyond targeting the students at risk we should also interact with their parents and guardians via parenting wordshops. Students support services and various NGO's will be approved to provide this much needed intervention.
